Cooking was the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries in 2015-2019 and the second leading cause of home fire deaths. Cooking caused 49 percent of reported home fires, 20 percent of reported home fire deaths, and 42 percent of home fire injuries.

Fire departments responded to an estimated average of 48,530 fires involving heating equipment per  year in 2014-2018, accounting for 14% of all reported home fires during this time. Heating fires resulted in annual

Smoking materials, including cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, started an estimated 17,200 home structure fires reported to U.S. fire departments in 2014. These fires caused 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in direct property damage. Smoking materials caused 5% of reported home fires, 21% of home fire deaths, 10% of home fire inju

 From 2015-2019 U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 7,400 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. These fires caused an annual average of 90 deaths, 670 injuries and $291 million in direct property damage.

Wildfires begin in both rural, and urban, areas.


Seasonal fires are caused by:  Fireworks, grilling, Halloween, lightning, outdoor entertaining, Thanksgiving, wildland fires, winter holiday safety. 


Groups of people at risk:  People with disabilities and the aging.

What is Firewise?

           

Our Residents want to ensure everyone's SAFETY especially during wildfire season.

 

The Firewise volunteers can assist in providing consultation to homeowners that wish to do the work themselves or organize volunteer labor to those homeowners that are physically unable to perform the work.    Please contact Firewise for more information on these services. 


We can all help make the world a safer place by learning more about how and why

fires start. We offer countless consumer-friendly safety tips on a wide range of

timely and important topics - everything you need to know to keep you, your family,

and your neighbors safe from fire and related hazards.

Firewise Committee Members Needed

As of August 2024 our ECR Firewise Team is  recruiting volunteers who can help make our Community a safer place.  Firewise offers countless safety tips on a wide range of timely and important topics – everything you need to know to keep you, your family, and your neighbors safe from fire, and related, hazards.

The Firewise Team meets monthly to attend the PAWUIC Firewise meeting and report back to our community the important updates and information relating to the safety of our community and surrounding areas susceptible to wildfires.  Please contact Susan Battisti for further details.  Thank you!

ECR became a Certified Firewise Community

On May 4, 2021 The National Firewise USA Program awarded The Estates at Cherry Ridge the following Certificate of Recognition for completing the programs annual requirements for 2021 – 2022.

    BLM CLEARING LANDS BORDERING ECR

    COMMENCING MONDAY, OCTOBER 31st through NOVEMBER

    *** JUST IN ***


    BLM has informed our ECR FireWise Committee that they will begin clearing lands [utilizing chainsaws and a masticator machine] on the east side of our development at the fenceline on October 31st.  This area consists of the land between the power lines and ECR properties.  


    This will create a fuel break and help keep our neighborhoods safe.
